Getting to Gay Rome and Getting Around

The historic centre of Gay Rome is compact and manageable on foot and most of it is closed to normal traffic.

Driving

Driving in Rome is an experience to be avoided so if arriving by car it's best to park it and use public transport to get around.

Buses

The network of buses, trams, metro and trains covers the whole city from 5.30am to midnight (metro to 11.30pm) and night buses take over until about 5am covering the main routes. The bus service is cheap and reliable, albeit slow due to traffic congestion.

The 110 Open is a bus service that stops at all the city's main sights, departing from Termini Station square every 20 minutes.

Metro

The metro only has two lines, but is the easiest and fastest way to get around and is convenient for several attractions.

Tickets cover all forms of transport and must be pre-purchased and validated at the start of every journey; there are daily tickets valid for unlimited rides, or standard tickets valid for one metro ride or 75 minutes on buses.

Taxis

Taxis are notoriously expensive and display a list of surcharges; they are difficult to find on the streets or even at taxi stands and are best ordered by the hotel concierge or at restaurants. Note that the meter gets switched on immediately so the time it takes to arrive is added to the bill. If hailing one on the street use only the official yellow and white taxis, make sure the meter is on and have small change handy.

Airports

Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO)

The fastest transportation is an express train departing every hour for Termini Station in the centre of Rome or the Sabina-Fiumicino line (FM1) which leaves every 15 minutes; the trip to Termini takes 30 minutes and the fare is around €11 while the FM1 is €5.5 to various destination outside the city centre.

There is a late night bus service to Tiburtina Station which can be arranged from near the arrivals terminal. A taxi service costs about €50 for the 40 to 60 minute drive to the city centre and passengers should use metered taxis only.

(PS - You may want to bring some extra luggage..the Shopping at the airport is unbelievable. if you like your designer labels, then you really are in for a treat. It is the only airport we landed at that has the sign of a designer over the name of the airport, as opposed to the airport name!)

Giovan Battista Pastine Airport (CIA)

Buses travel between the airport and the Anagnina metro station, as well as to the local train station, from where metros or trains connect to the city centre.

Terravision (tel: 06 7949 4572) offers a direct service from the airport to Termini central station, as does the less regular Schiaffini service. There is also a bus shuttle service.

Taxis are available for for the 40 minute ride costing €30 which is the quickest and easiest way to get to the city centre although rush hour traffic should be avoided. Metered,official and pre-booed taxis should only be used.
